What is a Veterinary Specialist?
A veterinary specialist is a veterinarian who has completed additional training and education in a specific area of veterinary medicine. They have expertise in a particular field such as surgery, dermatology, cardiology, oncology, neurology, ophthalmology, dentistry, or behaviour.
To become a veterinary specialist, a veterinarian must first complete a degree in veterinary medicine and obtain a licence to practise. Then, they must complete a rigorous training program, including an internship and residency, and pass a certification examination in their chosen specialty.
Veterinary specialists work closely with primary care veterinarians to provide specialised care for animals with complex medical conditions and are often called upon to consult on difficult cases or perform advanced procedures.
